his umbilical hernia. The least degree of error consists in the persistence of a little pouch of umbilical ccelom in the thickness of the abdominal wall, which is later expanded into an ordinary skin-covered umbilical hernia. The greatest degree of error consists in the larger part of the abdominal viscera remaining in the umbilical cord. It is with this latter condition that we have to deal in this case. A sharp distinction exists between umbilical hernia and exomphalos; the former is entirely skincovered ; in the latter the protruding viscera are covered by the walls of the expanded cord only?a thin, translucent membrane consisting of amniotic ectoderm, with a thin layer of Wharton's jelly, and lined by the umbilical ccelom.
